One of the things we are most passionate about is patient education. It is a source of pride for us that our patients be well-informed about their procedures, understanding the options as well as the expected outcomes. If you have any questions about an oral surgery procedure, we would love to help you find the answer. In the meantime, here are a few of the most common inquiries.
Oral surgery can refer to any procedure that is performed in or around your mouth or your jaw. Oral surgery may be needed to alleviate pain, restore functionality, or simply achieve a desired aesthetic outcome. Examples of common oral surgery procedures range from dental implants to corrective jaw procedures.
Oral surgeons can perform various procedures, including interventions to replace missing teeth; the most common example is dental implants. Oral surgeons may also perform tooth extractions for wisdom teeth, impacted teeth, or teeth that are damaged beyond repair. Additional examples of oral surgeries include bone grafting, corrective jaw surgery, and more.
It is not uncommon to experience some swelling, bruising, or tenderness following an oral surgical procedure. These symptoms can last for up to two weeks, but many patients find that they feel more or less back to normal within days. Before your procedure, Dr. Brandner will provide careful aftercare instructions to help you keep swelling and bruising at a minimum.
To ensure the comfort and safety of our patients, we provide several sedation options. Most often, we recommend an IV sedation method. In some cases, we may recommend general anesthesia, which is safely administered in a local hospital. Dr. Brandner will discuss sedation methods with you before your procedure.
If you have lost teeth, or anticipate having teeth extracted, dental implants are often the best solution. However, you may weigh factors, including cost and the amount of bone tissue you have in your jaw, both of which can be determinative.
